Derek Ho is the man behind the lens of Urban Light: a company that crafts wonderful, emotive wedding cinematography. Urban Light was a favourite project of mine to work on.

About the Project

On first meeting Derek I found that we had quite many things in common and we connected on a creative level very easily. He handed over complete control of the project, which involved a re-brand and website design and development. Derek’s main client base is wedding cinematography so he wanted to appeal to that market but he also wanted his taste and personality to shine through. The site has a clean modern look with retro graphic elements of yesteryear like ticket stubs, postcards and movie projectors. Not to mention whippets, Derek is a bit of a fan.

The website features a blog where Derek can post about his latest adventures, a contact form for clients to make bookings and a films page where Derek can post his beautiful movies. All managed and completely up-dateable by Derek.

Derek’s logo takes inspiration from old film canisters and movie lights

About the Project

AllSolus recently had a branding refresh completed by Isabel Kruger of IZZI design and they needed that translated into a web present that reflected their new look. I took inspiration from their logo and their new colour scheme and used the three colours of their brand to represent the different products and services that they offer.

STATT consulting works with global communities giving analysis and advice. They required a lightweight site with multilingual capabilities.

About the Project

STATT is a network of practitioners that works with governments and communities and brings together those driving globalisation and those who are vulnerable to it. They focus heavily on community engagement to guide innovative responses that combine with local knowledge and needs. They work for communities, countries and companies seeking targeted services.

STATT has a global audience and because of this they required a multilingual site that could grow with their company. I created a simple lightweight design that can be populated with up to 40 languages.

In its simplest form Love Freo is a long love letter to the City of Fremantle that has been written over the past three years in the form of a blog. It’s a side project of mine and another two local creatives* that live and work in Fremantle.

About the Project

The website began as a personal visual record of the different things, places and events that I came across in Fremantle, which generated a large readership over three years. It continues to offer a personal perspective of life in Fremantle but also acts as a guide for interested parties to things that go on in the port city.

The website is targeted mainly towards residents of the Perth Metro area but it also has a wider reach in to regional WA. It also provides a touch point and news feed for travelers and tourists who spent time in the port. 75% of our readers are women between the ages of 24-35.

Content is the leading force behind the website. Everything on the site can be accessed in a simple way. The home page leads to a feed of blog posts, which the user can scan through quickly by scrolling down the page. If an excerpt takes a reader’s interest, the post title and ‘read more’ links let the user continue on to the single post page. The page navigation is a simple list in the side bar. Archives and Categories are also in the side bar keeping with the standard blog format. Related posts at the end of each blog post suggest further reading for the user. Social media has also been integrated into the head, below the excerpt and at the end of a blog post.

Spaced: Art Out of Place is a new international biennial event, an initiative of IASKA and presented with Fremantle Arts Centre as part of the 2012 Perth Festival. It featured 16 projects by 21 Australian and overseas artists and I was invited to take part of The Abandoned Trolley Project.

I met one of the artists, Ritchie Ned Hansel back in 2010 at a character design workshop and he asked me to contribute to his Abandoned Trolley Project. Richie spent two months here as part of IASKA’s cultural exchange program in partnership with the Jakarta Biennale.

“The Abandoned Trolley Project” is a site specific project that intervenes in public space by using the trolley as an object where the artwork will be placed with the purpose of making the object more interesting or to add beauty to the object.

Each artist/designer was given a white blank trolley cover and carte blanche to do with as they pleased.

When I draped the cover over a trolley all I could see was a big wedge of cheese and that’s exactly what I created. I added the mouse in because I though he’d think, score a humongous piece of cheese. The tile is a bit of a weak play on the Philip K. Dick book Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. Surely mice dream of cheese.

Many thanks to Richie for giving me the opportunity to have a bit of fun.

The book is a personal visual record of the different things, places people and events that we* love in Fremantle.
